‘Time for reckoning’: Hackers breach Iranian religious app with over 5 million downloads

According to cybersecurity experts and observers, a wave of cyber operations against the Iranian regime occurred on Saturday morning, coinciding with a joint US-Israeli attack on targets in Iran.
The operations included hacking several news websites to display different messages and hacking BadeSaba, a religious calendar app with over 5 million downloads. It now displays the message «The time for reckoning has come» and a call for the armed forces to lay down their arms and join the people.
The cyberattack on the BadeSaba app was a smart move because it is used by government supporters and they tend to be more religious, said Hamid Kashfi, a security researcher and founder of cybersecurity company DarkCell.
Responsibility for these cyberattacks has not yet been confirmed. Security experts advise users to update applications, check permissions, activate two-factor authentication where possible, and be vigilant for suspicious messages or changes in service behavior.
As a reminder, on Saturday, February 28, internet connectivity in Iran dropped sharply at 07:06 GMT, and then again at 11:47 AM, remaining minimal.
It is also noted that cyberattacks have occurred on a number of Iranian government services and military facilities to limit Iran’s coordinated response to US and Israeli strikes.
