The current acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Yevheniy Khmara, will perform the duties of Minister of Defense.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this on his news channel following the meeting with Khmara.
«I believe that under the current conditions, real long-range effectiveness, really strong security work that will guarantee control over the internal situation in the components of the Defense Forces, and real experience in managing people in the Alpha Special Operations Center of the Security Service of Ukraine should become an advantage in the position of Minister of Defense of Ukraine,» Zelenskyy noted.
He also promised that together with the new head of the Ministry of Defense, all active programs for the development and strengthening of the Defense Forces will continue to be implemented, from direct funding of combat brigades and fair distribution of personnel to maximum provision of the NRC with all types of drones and the prompt implementation of agreements with partners.
After the «necessary legal procedures» are followed, Zelensky promised to submit Khmara’s candidacy for approval by the Verkhovna Rada.
We would like to remind you that today the Verkhovna Rada approved the new composition of the Cabinet of Ministers, but without the nominations of the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Instead, the resignation of Mykhailo Fedorov from this position caused protests throughout Ukraine and significant political resonance.
