The Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive 39 XR systems for training Leopard 2 crews without tanks

The Ukrainian military has begun receiving XR systems that allow training Leopard 2 crews in a virtual and mixed environment. This approach should reduce dependence on real equipment needed at the front and speed up the training of tankers.
As reported by «Military», the project is being implemented using solutions from the Finnish Varjo and Norwegian Fynd Reality within the framework of the Norwegian military assistance program to Ukraine. At the first stage, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are to receive 39 XR systems. The kit includes Varjo XR-4 Secure Edition headsets and the Fynd CORE XR software platform.
This is a tool that allows for familiarization, procedural and technical training without the involvement of combat vehicles. One of the main areas is the training of Leopard 2A4 crews. Fynd Reality has been working with these tanks since 2023, so the system is already adapted to the relevant training scenarios.
The companies claim that the XR approach can speed up military training by up to four times — from basic familiarization with the machine to confident operation of its systems. In addition to individual training, the platform supports multiplayer scenarios. This means that in one digital environment you can practice the interaction of crews and units, bringing training closer to real combat conditions.
The total cost of the project is approximately 82.5 million Norwegian kroner, or about 7.2 million euros. After the deployment of the complexes, the Ukrainian side will also be able to independently create training content. This is important because it will allow not only to use ready-made scenarios, but also to more quickly adapt training to its own combat experience and new tasks.
XR solutions are increasingly being used in military training, as they allow crews and technical personnel to be trained without downtime of real equipment, fuel consumption, and additional wear and tear on vehicles. This is especially relevant for Ukraine in the case of Western armored vehicles, where training needs to be scaled quickly, and every combat unit counts.
