For example, when trying to send a photo of an exam question to Doubao, owned by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, the AI responds: “During the college entrance exam, according to relevant requirements, the question answer service will be suspended.” A similar response appears when trying to explain to the AI that “this is not a college entrance exam.”
The most popular, DeepSeek, tells students that its service is unavailable during certain hours "to ensure the fairness of college entrance exams."
Yuanbao, owned by tech company Tencent, Qwen from Alibaba, and Kimi from Moonshot have also turned off image recognition features during exams.
“College entrance exam candidates, you are all crap,” one Weibo post said. “I can’t use DeepSeek to download images, I have to download ChatGPT again, I hope you all go to college.”
AI suspensions are not the only tool being used to prevent cheating during the gaokao. Several regions have previously announced they will use AI-based monitoring tools to watch for “abnormal behavior,” such as whispering or repeated glances between students, during the exams.
