20% of cyberattacks fall on Ukraine: Russia has intensified hybrid warfare

Russia continues to improve its methods, involving cybercriminals and using artificial intelligence to carry out targeted attacks. This was announced by Serhiy Prokopenko, head of the Department of Support for the National Cybersecurity Commission, at the International Cybersecurity Forum.

According to Prokopenko, the current 7th stage of cyberwar is marked by high-quality phishing campaigns targeting specific individuals of interest to Russia. Attacks are carried out not only on computers, but also on mobile devices of Ukrainian military and high-ranking officials. This allows access to critically important data.

In addition, there is coordination of cyberattacks with military and information operations. For example, after massive missile strikes on Ukrainian cities, the next day there are reports of mass mining of infrastructure facilities. Russia is also actively conducting disinformation campaigns, trying to create the image of Ukraine as an aggressor.

The role of cybercriminals, who are used by the Kremlin in its own interests, has noticeably increased. For example, attacks on Ukrainian financial institutions are often carried out by groups that previously engaged in stealing money and now work for the interests of Russian intelligence services.

Russia is not only attacking Ukraine, but also trying to destabilize its partners. 80% of cyberattacks are directed at Western countries, in particular the USA and Europe. The use of influence technologies, such as fake websites and social networks, helps Moscow promote narratives that are beneficial to it.
