AI helps programmers be more productive and takes the burden off them
«For example, all developers have to write 'commit messages' — comments in which you describe changes, saving the code at a certain point. In the past, few people spent a lot of time on this. Today, all you have to do is say to the AI, 'Write me a good message,' and it produces wonderful, detailed comments,» Steinberg told Business Insider. «In the past, all you would see were messages like 'work in progress' or something completely useless. Even if the message was useful, the AI adds much more detail. Now I never have to think about what to write. And that’s just a tiny part of what the AI can do.»
The programmer says he can now write an app in days, whereas it used to take months. He recently created an app for his daughter’s school to track volunteer hours. Thanks to AI, it took him just a few days to develop.
Steinberg and his wife also have a side business developing software for lighting sales agencies. They don’t yet use artificial intelligence for this, but they plan to.
But what really changed the programmer’s opinion about artificial intelligence was his discovery of Claude Code.
«It seemed to work at least 5 times better than anything I had seen before. The first website I wrote using vibe coding that actually worked was for my wife’s company during a conference,» says the IT guy.
In a few days, he created an entire platform for the conference where guests could register and receive notifications, manufacturers could register and scan guest badges to see who visited their booth.
Why a programmer isn’t afraid of losing his job to AI
As Steinberg explains, software engineers work for software companies, and their main goal is to release new features as quickly as possible and do something useful for customers. He believes that AI will only enhance this process: there will be more features, they will appear faster and they will be of higher quality. Maybe some customers will decide what they can do themselves, but the programmer does not think that this will negatively affect his work.
«In terms of my career, I think I’ve only been successful because I went through all that pain to really understand how things work. If I hadn’t had to do that, I don’t know if I would have had the discipline to really learn. If you don’t really understand how things work, you won’t get very far. It’s a house of cards that will eventually collapse,» Steinberg explains.
He also notes that companies may not need as many people, but the IT guy isn’t too worried about that because he can create things and make money on his own.
