"What used to be the work of programmers is increasingly moving into the category of "monkey jobs." A native of Aityte with 20 years of experience is convinced that AI will soon replace programmers. There is a discussion in Threads with 100+ comments
Threads user agnislav, whose profile lists 20 years of experience in IT, is thinking about how to get into IT in 2025.

«I am often asked how to „get into IT“ in 2025? How to find a job as a Jun? Is it easier to get into QA? The short answer is almost impossible. Juns are not needed. Middles are almost not needed anymore. With the help of AI tools, today one Senior Developer + one Senior QA can do the work that previously required a full team, or even two,» he writes .
Next, we quote other arguments of the specialist.
The number of new orders on Upwork, the IT expert notes, is falling every month, as are the rankings.
Companies are laying off engineers en masse, whose work can be taken over by a proven Senior Engineer who is proficient in Cursor + MCP.
Competition in the market is growing every month, and this is competition with developers with commercial experience. Of particular note is the fact of dumping from emerging markets, such as India, which are ready to do the same work at rates ¾ of what we have become accustomed to in recent years.
Therefore, if you want to go into IT just because they pay more, you will most likely either not succeed or it will be long and painful.
Who, in the expert’s opinion, should still try their hand at IT?
If you like it. If you are ready to learn and make your way, simply because it is «for you». The situation is about the same as 20-30-50 years ago. You have to really want it, beat your head against the wall, look for options and learn, learn, create something, do and learn again.
If you are ready to constantly learn for the future. If you are the type of person who can set a long-term, difficult goal for themselves and go towards it, despite difficulties and failures.
If for you the word «impossible» equals «cool challenge, I can do it too.» And you are ready to compete in a rapidly changing market with huge competition from people who ALREADY have experience.
Just 2 years ago, I was sure that my son needed to know how to program if he wanted to earn a steady living. Today, I’m not so sure anymore.
The whole value of programmers was precisely to translate the language of business into the language of computers. This is the only reason. What was a skill and an art has now become a management. Yes, you still need to understand the architecture, the infrastructure, the theory and practice of testing. But what was the work of programmers is increasingly moving into the category of «monkey job.»
Modern requirements are not so much to be able to do it by hand, but to know how it works and how it should be written, tested, and deployed. To be a lead developer or lead tester who guides and controls the process, rather than doing it himself.
And the dilemma is that for this to happen, there must already be sufficient experience. And to gain it, it used to take at least three, and preferably five, years of active commercial development.
Most courses don’t teach this right now. They teach «how to do it yourself.» Right now, not only is the industry itself transforming, but so are the training requirements to meet this new industry reality. I’m sure that reality will adapt. That training programs will be developed. That new practices for «what to do with junk» will be developed.
But for now, it resembles the Wild West. Where everything depends only on you. How much you want. How much you are ready. Don’t you have other, easier ways? Are there no ways that suit you more? «Change or die out» — no one has canceled the laws of evolution.
What do the IT people think?
The specialist’s post is actively commented on by other IT professionals. And they often disagree with his arguments. « Complete and stupid shit. One senior with a cursor will never replace a full-fledged team or even two, as the author fantasizes. This is obvious to anyone who works with projects a little larger than a 10-file shitty startup. The cursor is stupidly incapable of holding a large context, it is ideal for small, isolated and simple tasks. First, you spend time to form a clear, detailed prompt, and then you sit and analyze what the AI shit-coded and generate it again with edits,» writes a user with the nickname fjekija1 .
User vitaliy.18 notes: «For example, Epam is constantly hiring Juns. For AI to replace people, you need to learn how to use it, the work does not become less from the fact that Senior uses Chat GPT in his work, etc. It’s just that now he will have a little more free time to spend on himself.»
aleksandr_nikolaev__ believes that AI is not actually capable of writing projects for you. «It won’t even generate a part of the finished logic for your program without a million technical instructions and corrections to its code. And even then, it will break what worked before. It’s just a new generation Google on steroids, nothing more. To generate a piece of logic, you need to have all the basic knowledge, including programming principles, because it will create as it pleases,» the specialist argues.
«Unfortunately, it’s true, I finished specialized training in Spain (java and sql databases), it’s impossible to get a job without 2 years of experience, it seems that there are ATS filters where, if you have, for example, up to 1 year of practice and all the skills that are in the job description, you get a „no reply“ that is, „no“. I’ve already given up. Maybe there will be a chance while working in a company as a KAM to purposefully move to the IT department, because otherwise I don’t see any possibility (and by the way, a KAM gets 2 times more than an IT developer, so I wasn’t going for the money…),» reports kate.lysenko.
«I completely agree with the market situation, changing requirements and the style of developers’ work. I can add that now, there are still a number of areas where the need for «rabbit coder» skills still remains (miltech, data processing, etc.). The problem is that the necessary skills must be quite highly specialized. So if you have the passion you described, then you also need to direct it to one chosen area in order to earn a place in the market. Yes, this will later lead to a number of problems, but this is one of the ways to «get by,» — notes mar4ik_yatsiv in contrast to other commentators.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
