Vibecoding has reached a new level, says Andrey Karpaty after celebrating the first anniversary of his coining the term. Programming through AI prompts has already transformed the IT industry. Now the OpenAI co-founder predicts that the future lies in “agent engineering.”
If vibecoding is when people write prompts for AI to create code, then, according to OpenAI co-founder Andrey Karpaty, “agent engineering” is when AI agents write code on their own.
“Many have tried to come up with a better name to distinguish this phenomenon from vibecoding. My personal favorite right now is ‘agent engineering,’” he wrote in a recent post on X.
Karpaty noted that he calls it “agent engineering” not only because agents write the code, but also because “there is a skill, science, and expertise in this process.”
Vibecoding has become one of the biggest innovations in the AI revolution, with prominent CEOs and startup founders actively implementing the approach into their teams and billions being invested in new companies working in this area.
For example, Lovable , one of Europe’s fastest-growing startups, announced in December that it had raised $330 million in a Series B round at a $6.6 billion valuation. Cursor , the developer of an AI code editor, announced a $2.3 billion Series D round in November, noting that its annual revenue had already surpassed $1 billion.
“In my Wikipedia biography, ‘vibecoding’ is already listed as my main memetic ‘achievement,’ and the article about it surpassed the main one in terms of volume. Lol,” Karpaty wrote in X, commenting on the rapid popularity of the term.
