Harry Newman, founder of Facepunch Studios and developer of the popular video game sandbox Garry’s Mod, believes that over-reliance on AI in programming will hurt imagination.
At the same time, Newman himself regularly uses artificial intelligence, because it makes his work much easier.
«I’m not really concerned about artificial intelligence because it makes my job a lot easier, but I know a lot of artists are more sensitive to it. I think programmers have come to terms with it. They’ve seen how useful it is, how much it increases their efficiency», Harry Newman told PC Gamer.
According to the creator of Garry’s Mod, he considers the use of artificial intelligence in programming to be similar to watching porn.
«I mean, if you watch too much porn, you lose the ability to orgasm through imagination. I think you have to split it 50/50. Sometimes you have to use your imagination to be able to do that,» Harry Newman explained.
In his opinion, if you always rely on artificial intelligence, you can lose the ability to think critically. At the same time, Newman finds AI quite useful in his work.
«I think I learned more from AI than I gave it. It taught me techniques and new things that are far better than anything I’ve ever found [while searching] on the internet,» the developer said.
He believes that AI is developing so quickly that people cannot ignore it.
«We use AI in our coding all the time. It’s useful, it’s fast. But for art, it’s a pretty hot topic,» Harry Newman noted.
Facepunch Studios is currently preparing to release a spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod, s&box. The project is scheduled to be released on Steam in April.
