Amazon is in talks to invest in OpenAI in a potential deal that could value the AI company at more than $500 billion.
This is reported by Reuters, citing sources.
Amazon is considering investing about $10 billion in OpenAI. However, the negotiation process is in an active phase and the details are constantly changing.
According to the source, this strategy indicates that OpenAI is now free to collaborate with various partners, moving away from its non-profit status and settling relations with Microsoft.
Microsoft currently owns 27% of the AI company's shares, and it also has exclusive rights to distribute OpenAI models through its cloud services.
The Information, which first reported the talks with Amazon, notes that OpenAI plans to use Amazon Trainium chips. These chips are direct competitors to developments from Nvidia and Google.
OpenAI is also looking to sell Amazon an enterprise version of ChatGPT, but it's unclear whether the deal includes integration of ChatGPT features, such as for shopping, that Amazon is developing for its own apps.
The Amazon funding could pave the way for a broader round of funding with additional investors, sources said.
