Previously, developers could only use Claude in Slack for minor help — writing small code snippets, debugging, or explanations. Now, by tagging @Claude, they can initiate a full-fledged coding session using the context of Slack, such as bug reports or feature requests, TechCrunch writes .
Claude analyzes recent messages to determine the correct repository, posts progress updates to the appropriate branches, and shares links to view work and open pull requests.
This decision reflects a general shift in the industry: AI coding assistants are moving from IDEs to collaboration tools that teams use every day.
Cursor offers Slack integration for building and debugging code in threads, while GitHub Copilot recently added features for generating pull requests from chat. OpenAI’s Codex is available through custom Slack bots.
For Slack, this positioning as an “agent hub” where AI processes the work context provides a strategic advantage: any AI tool that dominates Slack—the hub of engineering communication—could change the way all software development teams work.
By allowing developers to seamlessly transition from conversation to code without switching applications, Claude Code and similar tools represent a shift toward AI-powered collaboration that could fundamentally change developer workflows.
