Apple raised prices for previous iPhone models by $100. The reasons are familiar - memory shortages and the AI boom
Amid the presentation of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo, Apple has increased the cost of its smartphone models available for sale. The prices of the iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17e in the company’s official online store have increased by $100.
Amid the presentation of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo, Apple has increased the cost of its smartphone models available for sale. The prices of the iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17e in the company’s official online store have increased by $100.
As MacRumors notes, the price revision was preceded by numerous assumptions from analysts and warnings from the technology giant’s management. However, after the announcement of new flagship devices, Apple stopped producing the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
After updating the price list, the starting prices for the existing line of devices were distributed as follows:
iPhone 17e — from $699 (previously — $599);
iPhone 16 — from $799 (previously — $699);
iPhone 17 — from $899 (previously — $799);
iPhone Air — from $1099 (previously — $999).
The reason for the increase in the price of gadgets was the sharp increase in the cost of components. In late June, former Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company was no longer able to independently compensate for the increase in costs for memory chips and storage devices.
The main shortage in the market was caused by technology companies in the field of artificial intelligence and «neocloud», which are actively building new data centers.
Apple CEO Tim Cook compared the semiconductor market to a once-in-a-century flood. «In over 40 years, I’ve never seen anything like this in any industry,» he said.
Recall that yesterday, September 10, Apple officially announced its first foldable smartphone — the iPhone Duo. The device, which has been rumored for years, received a passport form factor, two screens, the latest processor and the integration of AI algorithms to operate two batteries as a single unit.
