A prototype robot resembling a digital character from a Pixar screen saver can move in different ways, writes Cnet, citing a description of the project published on the Apple Machine Learning Research website.

«Expression-driven movements significantly increase user engagement and perceived robot quality,» the article says.
Apple’s lamp, which resembles Pixar’s Luxo Jr., knocks over a few wooden blocks like a naughty cat, follows a book as it moves to always illuminate the pages. It also responds to a person waving at it to show it where to turn. It generally acts like a cute and helpful pet, similar to its digital Pixar prototype.
«While it basically resembles a fixture, it contains subtle anthropomorphic elements — such as the lamp head and the arm connecting the head to the stand — that create the appearance of a head and neck,» the team wrote.
In total, the developers created six different task scenarios for the robot lamp to compare the movements of a functional robot with a robot lamp that sometimes moves like a living being. For example, Luxo Jr., when illuminating a subject for photography, shakes the lampshade and appears to «look» at the user as it responds.
In another task, when asked «What’s the weather like today?», Apple’s robot lamp looks out the window as if checking the conditions before answering.
