Unbreakable ATB. As the largest Ukrainian chain of food supermarkets, it supplies 1,250 stores even in blackouts and helps everyone have light

The cold November evening, when the Russians once again released more than a hundred Shaheds to leave the Ukrainians without electricity, turned out to be colder than ever. For Olga and her husband, the densely populated area of the capital Poznyaki, as well as for tens of thousands of locals, has become like a continuous dark spot, where the headlights of cars are flashing here and there. Most of the locals, although they have power banks, lamps or alternative power sources from past years' experience, are unlikely to be able to have a delicious dinner at home. After all, 25-story buildings are fully electrified, without gas. That is, to heat at least tea or cook something nowadays, as well as to go up to the quartile without an elevator at all, is a task with an asterisk. The big hope for residents of high-rise buildings during blackouts is generator-equipped shops and catering establishments, where you can drink hot coffee, eat a freshly baked panini and charge your phone. For Olga and her husband, the closest such source of stable light is the ATB store in the area, where, despite many hours of power outages, everything works.

dev.ua visited the store and found out how ATB stability islands work in Poznyaki, the capital, and beyond.

Always and everywhere with light

As dev.ua learned, as of November 25, all 1,250 stores of ATB-MARKET LLC are equipped with diesel power plants. Two DEZs ensure uninterrupted operation of the ATB office during outages. And some stores have installed two low-power power plants.

Thanks to this, economical lighting, cash register areas and refrigerators where perishable goods are stored are used in stores. Also, such means allow visitors to warm up, so the network records an increase in the flow of customers to stores.

The total number of alternative power sources in the network, according to the company, is 1350 units. What’s more: by the end of the current year, another 131 diesel power plants are planned to be installed.

Over the past three years, the company has already invested UAH 588 million in the purchase of diesel power plants, and ATB invested another UAH 253 million in solar power plants, which are installed in the office and retail outlets for the maximum comfort of employees and customers.

The company said that generators and power plants are supplied to the largest Ukrainian food chain from the countries of the European Union and Turkey. There is also Ukrainian-made equipment with Italian components.

Alternative ATB

For smooth and high-quality operation of the store, it is necessary that the capacity of the alternative source of uninterrupted power supply is at least 80 kW, ATB notes. «The capacity depends on the area of the store and the amount of installed equipment. The company tries to reduce electricity consumption every year by introducing energy-saving technologies and revising the concept of store construction,» ATB adds.

Currently, the majority of alternative energy sources in the ATB network are diesel power plants. Subcontractors deliver fuel to ATB using their own transport. «For the full functioning of the store, approximately 20 liters of fuel per hour are required,» ATB informed dev.ua.

However, already now, in the autumn-winter period, up to 15% (up to 30% in the summer) of stores' consumption is provided by solar power plants. By the end of the year, it is planned to install SES in 40 retail outlets. The general plan is much larger — solar energy is to provide power to 187 stores, and the planned construction of a power plant with a design capacity of 1.8 MW is also planned at the RC (distribution center).

Moreover, the company currently promotes energy independence for everyone and has very interesting offers.

Energy independence from ATB — in every family
