During a speech at a plenary session of the Verkhovna Rada, the 5th President of Ukraine spoke out in favor of a complete ban on the Russian-linked messenger.
Petro Poroshenko emphasized from the Verkhovna Rada rostrum that Telegram became a network for planning the murder of MP Andriy Parubiy.
"Law enforcement agencies have proven that the murder was organized through the Telegram network. Now, a network of terrorist actions against Ukraine is being created through Telegram. It is our matter of honor to ban Telegram in Ukraine now," Poroshenko emphasized.
Similar calls to ban the popular messenger were heard even earlier by other Ukrainian figures. The head of the charity foundation "Return Alive" Taras Chmut said that Telegram and TikTok are undermining the state's mobilization efforts.
“Until we close TikTok and Telegram, until we start doing something with openly pro-Russian bloggers and other pseudo-opinion leaders, unfortunately it will be difficult,” Chmut said.
However, the head of the President's Office, Andriy Yermak, expressed a radically opposite opinion.
"We have a society, we are for freedom. And, for example, 80% of the military are categorically against banning Telegram. The military, who give us the opportunity to sit here, their voice must be taken into account and we must not create a split in society today," Yermak replied.
Meanwhile, many Ukrainian companies use Telegram for internal communication. According to a survey conducted by dev.ua, 71.4% of respondents use Telegram to resolve work issues. And only 14.3% prohibit the use of Durov's messenger at the level of corporate rules.
