It seems that the crypto business' optimism about Trump's friendly policies has run out: Bitcoin has fallen 25% from its all-time high, and investors are withdrawing money
Bitcoin fell more than 5% in a day and is about 25% below its all-time high in December. In Asia, bitcoin was trading at $78,782, and in London this morning it was around $78,900. The fall in the world’s largest cryptocurrency was due to uncertainty over US President Donald Trump’s tariff plans and cryptocurrency policy, as well as a decline in investor confidence, who began to withdraw their money after the Bybit hack of $1.5 billion. If the decline continues until the end of Friday, it will be the biggest monthly drop since June 2022.

If the decline continues until the end of Friday, it will be the biggest monthly drop since June 2022.
«Bitcoin’s fall below $80,000 suggests that the positive sentiment from a crypto-friendly administration and vocal support has run out,» said Joshua Chu, co-chairman of the Hong Kong Web3 Association, Reuters reports .
The world’s largest cryptocurrency has lost a quarter of its market value since mid-December, when it topped $105,000 on optimism that the Trump administration would support a strategic bitcoin fund and loosen regulation.
Aside from the flurry of crypto-friendly appointments since Trump took office, there has been little concrete news about this policy for investors. Other than the fact that on January 24, Donald Trump issued an executive order on digital assets in the US. It does not carry much legal weight, but it was expected as the first step in the development of the crypto industry, but it does not seem to have lived up to expectations.
«The momentum ran out when there was no fresh news to continue to support the optimistic narrative,» said Kyle Rodda, senior financial market analyst at Capital.com.
Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market value, fell nearly 6% to $2,149.38, its lowest since January 2024.
Investors are also pulling money out of bitcoin exchanges, with more than $1 billion being withdrawn on Tuesday, the largest single-day outflow since their debut last year.
Global investors are worried by signs that the so-called exceptionalism of the American economy may be fading, as Trump prepares to impose tariffs that raise fears of rising global inflation and slowing growth.
The cryptocurrency world also got nervous after Bybit, the world’s second-largest exchange after Binance, said on Feb. 21 that hackers had stolen about $1.5 billion worth of Ethereum. Bybit serves more than 60 million users worldwide and offers access to a variety of cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin and ether. Blockchain research firm Elliptic said the hack was likely the largest known theft of any kind.
«The last time we saw this kind of sentiment was in 2022,» Caroline Bowler, chief executive officer of BTC Markets Pty Ltd, told Bloomberg, referring to the «cryptocurrency winter,» when prices fell sharply amid rising interest rates and industry woes. «This drop can be seen as a response to macro concerns about Trump’s tariffs and geopolitical uncertainty.»
