A Ukrainian indie game developer has released a game inspired by the brutal reality of the war in Ukraine. What makes BROKEN LIFE special?
Solo game developer Konstantin Reus from Odessa is currently working on a point-and-click adventure game set in the post-apocalyptic world of BROKEN LIFE. The game is about the developer’s own life experience during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Solo game developer Konstantin Reus from Odessa is currently working on a point-and-click adventure game set in the post-apocalyptic world of BROKEN LIFE. The game is about the developer’s own life experience during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
About development
Konstantin Reus began working on the game in March 2023. And already in June 2024, he released the demo version of BROKEN LIFE. Early access to the 1st chapter became available on April 30, 2025.
The game is built on the Clickteam Fusion 2.5 engine and is around 2-3 hours long. «As a solo developer, I put my heart, soul, and tears into every aspect of this game,» the developer says.
The game is currently available on Steam (PC) for $5 (only 99 UAH) with a 20% discount, which is valid, according to Konstantin, until May 10.
About the plot and features
The main character of the game is Leo the cat, a former soldier who returns to his recently de-occupied hometown and tries to find out the fate of his family.
The hero will have to solve many dark and mysterious puzzles in houses, find various secrets in the atmosphere of the 2D environment. According to the developer, the puzzles are designed to serve the plot, not the gameplay.
«The story reflects my personal journey through the war in Ukraine,» notes Konstantin Reus, adding that with the help of BROKEN LIFE he tried to overcome depression and cope with his feelings, panic attacks, and grief from the war.
The player can choose different actions during events. And the game’s non-linear story will allow his decisions to influence its development.
The developer also emphasizes that the game’s story isn’t 100% positive or negative. «There’s no right or wrong answer, there’s just different paths you can take,» he adds.
About visuals
As he progresses through his hometown in the game, Leo observes the numerous destructions his region has suffered while under prolonged occupation.
It is the visual series, based on the developer’s own vision, as well as real-life observation and numerous photographs and videos of destroyed and devastated cities, that Konstantin Reus calls the pillar of the game.
«Every detail evokes the emotions of war — the senseless destruction and the eerie emptiness that remains in its wake,» he adds.
About sound
All dialogues and cutscenes of BROKEN LIFE have already been voiced in 17 languages using artificial intelligence.
The developer emphasizes that this will allow people with poor eyesight or other difficulties with long-term reading to immerse themselves in the game. However, this AI option can be turned off in the settings if the player wishes.
Reburn Studio, formed by Ukrainian developers of the Metro series, has officially announced its debut game La Quimera. Director Nicolas Winding Ref is working on its plot.
UPD. «The developer market is 50 times larger than the Ukrainian one.» N-iX opened an office in India, where the first 4 specialists are already working. There were 600–1000 candidates for one vacancy
