AMD CEO Lisa Su was named CEO of the year by Time magazine. Her leadership transformed AMD from an «unprofitable» and «non-investment-grade» company to a corporation that exploited Intel’s weaknesses to capture valuable PC processor market share and surpass its longtime rival in market value.

AMD shares have risen by 3,700% since Lisa Su took over the company in 2014, Wccftech reports. Since then, AMD has released its famous line of Zen processors and managed to gain a foothold in the cloud computing and data center market.

AMD has also acquired other companies, the most famous of which is developer Xilinx. These deals have allowed AMD to have the most diversified product portfolio in the era of artificial intelligence.

However, with NVIDIA having a near-monopoly in the AI market, the reorientation of major tech companies to custom AI processors developed by the likes of Broadcom and Marvel has cast doubt on AMD’s market position.

In 2024, the industry was slowly gaining momentum towards custom AI chips. Amazon released a new batch of its AI processors, and Marvell also expressed confidence that custom AI chips will be one of the biggest growth drivers in certain business units.

In his interview with Time magazine, Su sees these new developments as an «opportunity.» She believes that custom chips will not be able to completely replace AMD products in the market. Instead, big tech firms will rely on AMD’s custom processors and chips to diversify their computing ecosystems, Su said.

Victory over Intel

Su’s tenure at AMD was accompanied by a rapid increase in the stock price, which allowed the company to overtake its larger competitor Intel Corporation in terms of market capitalization. AMD shares are up nearly 3,700% since October 2014 after losing 37% since their peak in March 2024. The rise in share price has also been accompanied by rising revenue and profitability as the company continues to eat away at Intel’s market share and into target industries such as game consoles.

AMD’s revenue in the 2014 fiscal year was $5.5 billion. On the other hand, the company’s sales in the third quarter of 2024 amounted to $6.8 billion, which means that it earned more in the last quarter than in the entire 12 months of 2014.

AMD is entering 2025 on the heels of a strategic overhaul that saw 4% of its workforce laid off in November to align its resources with its «biggest growth opportunities.»

Instead, the once mighty Intel is going through difficult times and announced on December 1 that its CEO is stepping down. Pat Gelsinger has devoted nearly 30 years of his career to Intel and has worked on the launch of technologies such as Wi-Fi and USB, as well as the famous Intel Core and Xeon processor series.

When Gelsinger returned to the company in 2021, it was already in stagnation, and the task of an experienced top manager was to improve its situation.dev.ua told how he failed to cope with this task, and why Intel is now in an even bigger crisis.
