Senior Fullstack Product Engineer Denis Klymenko shared his thoughts on the situation in the IT industry, where companies are increasingly considering replacing Junos with artificial intelligence tools. He considers such an approach to be self-destructive.
«Today, many companies are seriously thinking: why hire Junkies if AI can already write code at their level? It sounds logical, but in reality it is a dangerous trap,» Klymenko wrote on LinkedIn.
According to him, IT professionals, especially juniors, are usually constantly learning from more experienced colleagues. Over time, they grow to the level of middlemen and seniors, and thus there are always new specialists on the market.
«Now imagine that Juns are replaced by neural networks. In a few years, there will simply be no one to rise to the level of senior. In fact, we are cutting off our future,» the IT expert points out.
This trend is confirmed by a new study from Stanford University, which shows the negative impact of artificial intelligence on the recruitment of junior software engineers. According to their data, early-career workers, that is, between the ages of 22 and 25, who work in professions most vulnerable to the impact of AI, experienced a 13% relative decline in employment. Such professions include Software Engineer.
Denis Klymenko noted that beginners often start relying on AI instead of understanding the code themselves, and this is also a problem. In his opinion, novices should use AI only for training, while more experienced specialists, on the contrary, need more help from AI, because their time is more valuable.
«This way, we will maintain both efficiency and the development of new generations… IT is not an industry where we should rush to give all roles to neural networks. Because tomorrow we may be left without our own future,» the programmer added.
In 2025, EPAM Ukraine plans to increase the hiring of juniors: what does the company see as the potential of beginners and how have the requirements for them changed?
