Anthropic has announced the launch of a test version of its browser-based AI agent, powered by Claude models.
The agent, called Claude for Chrome, is currently rolling out to 1,000 subscribers to Anthropic’s Max plan, which costs between $100 and $200 per month. The company has also opened a waiting list for anyone interested, TechCrunch reports .
With the Chrome extension, select users can now interact with Claude in a side window that keeps context of everything happening in their browser. Users can also grant Claude agent permission to perform certain actions and tasks on their behalf.
In a blog post published on Tuesday, Anthropic warned that the rise of browser-enabled AI agents poses new security risks.
Anthropic says it hopes to use this research launch as an opportunity to identify and address new security threats, but the company has already implemented several mechanisms to protect against attacks that manipulate requests.
According to Anthropic, these measures have reduced the success rate of such attacks from 23.6% to 11.2%.
For example, Anthropic says that users can restrict Claude's browser agent from accessing certain sites in the app's settings, and the company has blocked Claude from accessing websites that offer financial services, adult content, and pirated content by default. The company also says that Claude's browser agent will ask for user permission before "carrying out high-risk actions such as posting, purchasing, or sharing personal information."
