As TechCrunch reports , the new development is designed to solve the problem of the lack of ancient DNA, which is critical for projects like the return of the dodo bird population.
The GenoMorph platform uses technologies from 3D morphology, comparative genomics, and developmental biology. Unlike the woolly mammoth , for which scientists were able to obtain about 100 genomes due to better DNA preservation in cold climates, for the dodo, researchers only have one genome due to its tropical habitat.
To create the platform, the company combined developmental data from chickens, quails, ducks and pigeons with 3D measurements of the skulls of more than 70 bird species. According to Colossal CEO and co-founder Ben Lamm, the AI analyzes the activity of DNA regions during the formation of beaks and facial structures, predicting genetic switches. So far, the team has identified about 2,300 promising DNA editing targets related to dodo morphology.
To test these changes, the company developed a system to deliver editing tools using lipid nanoparticles directly into bird embryos, allowing them to observe the results without waiting for a full reproductive cycle. In addition, a colony of Nicobar pigeons, the dodo's closest living relative, has 36 individuals, and the researchers have managed to create cells that form eggs and sperm.
Company investor Peter Diamandis announced the formation of a new venture firm, NeoGenesis Capital, to support businesses leveraging Colossal's bio-based platforms across a variety of industries.
Colossal Biosciences has previously raised significant funding and announced plans to bring back extinct species, including the woolly mammoth and the Tasmanian wolf , using modern genomic engineering techniques.
