«You can’t beat AI on raw horsepower. That’s over. Maybe this year,» Altman said at a meeting with students, Business Insider reported.
Kevin Weil, who previously worked at Facebook and Instagram, noted that the earlier students start integrating artificial intelligence into their daily lives, the better prepared they will be when it appears in their future professions.
«I think the lesson to take away from this is to just start using these tools. Start incorporating them into your work, into your learning. When you’re doing something new, ask yourself, ‘Is there a way that AI could help me do this faster?’» advised the Chief Product Officer at OpenAI.
According to Sam Altman, trying to beat AI «purely on skill» is like trying to «beat a calculator» in arithmetic.
«Will you be better than AI at math, or better programmers than AI itself, or better at physics? The answer is no, you won’t be better at any of those things. But the specific skills — you will be able to do things with AI that no one could do before, and there will be new ways to work with it,» he said.
He believes that in the future, AI will be so advanced that everyone will have access to the equivalent of «the best, most competent company on Earth.» To compete in such a world, Altman recommended that the students in attendance develop new skills that will help them use AI to their advantage.
«The skills you will need in this world are understanding what people want, creative vision, rapid adaptability, resilience to the changes that are happening around you, and the ability to work with these tools to do much more than people could without them,» said the head of OpenAI.
As students begin their job search, it would be helpful to keep artificial intelligence in mind, Weil said, adding that companies that view the technology as a potential enabler, rather than a competitor, are best positioned to succeed.
«If you’re building something and you’re nervous about our next model coming out because it can do what you do, that’s not the best place to work. But if you’re building something and you can’t wait for our next model because you’re on the edge of your seat and our next model, which is going to be a lot smarter, will make your product awesome, that’s a good place to work,» says Kevin Weil.
