RAM manufacturers have begun preparations for the release of DDR6, which is twice as fast as the current generation. When it may appear on sale
Leading memory chip manufacturers — Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron — have begun preliminary development of substrates for the upcoming DDR6 standard. Although the final JEDEC specifications are still in the process of being finalized, the companies are already formulating technical specifications for component suppliers to meet the needs of the AI industry in a timely manner.
This is reported by TheElec, citing industry sources. According to the media, the developers have already provided partners with basic information about the architecture of future modules, including memory thickness and preliminary routing schemes.
«Memory manufacturers and substrate suppliers typically begin joint development more than two years before a product is released. The initial stage for DDR6 began recently,» the insider claims.
The need for an early start is due to the explosive growth of the artificial intelligence sector. DDR6 is expected to offer a dramatic leap in performance: while current DDR5 peaks at 8.4 Gbps, the new standard will start at 8.8 Gbps and eventually be able to deliver up to 17.6 Gbps. This will be possible thanks to an updated subchannel architecture (4×24 bits) designed to handle massive amounts of data in AI processing centers.
Currently, the server market has almost completely switched to the current standard — the share of DDR5 is about 80%, and by the end of 2026 it is expected to grow to 90%. The commercial launch of DDR6 memory is planned for approximately 2028–2029.
Recall that the global RAM market is experiencing an unprecedented crisis caused by the explosive demand for chips for artificial intelligence. DRAM prices have increased by 171,8% over the year and have even exceeded the growth rate of the value of gold. A 64 GB DDR5 memory kit can cost over $500 — more expensive than a PlayStation 5 game console.
