Discord says the vast majority of users won't encounter the new age verification system
Discord has clarified the details of the new update: "the vast majority of users" will be able to use the platform in their usual mode. They will not have to scan their faces or provide documents for age verification to gain full access to all the service's features.
Discord has clarified the details of the new update: "the vast majority of users" will be able to use the platform in their usual mode. They will not have to scan their faces or provide documents for age verification to gain full access to all the service's features.
In its post, Discord noted that for many users, “age prediction” based on the information already available on the service will likely be sufficient: “We’ve seen questions about our age verification system update and want to provide more clarity. We understand how important these changes are to our community.”
Yesterday, the company provided some additional clarification:
Discord does not require everyone to undergo a facial scan or upload ID to use the platform;
the vast majority of people can continue to use Discord exactly as they do today and will never be asked to verify their age.
However, if Discord's age model can't accurately or specifically estimate a user's age, they will still have to use a video selfie or ID to prove they're an adult. Users who aren't verified as adults or under 18 will have a "teen-appropriate" experience with some restrictions, such as being blocked from age-restricted servers.
