7 free English tests: results can be added to your resume, and some come with certificates

English teacher Yuliia Kolos has compiled a selection of free English tests, outlining the pros and cons of each. Some of them provide certificates that can be added to LinkedIn or downloaded as a PDF.

1. EF SET (EF Standard English Test)

Regarding this test, Yuliia did not point out any minuses, only pluses:

CEFR level (international scale for determining the level of proficiency in a foreign language A1–C2);
you can add a certificate to LinkedIn;
the result is sent by mail;
You can download the pdf, «put» it in a Google Doc, and add a link to your resume.

2. Test Your English by the British Council

Among the advantages:

official resource;
good quality of questions.

Only one minus:

they do not provide a certificate. But, as Yulia wrote, you can take a screenshot as confirmation of the result (informally).

3. SmallTalk English Speaking Level Test

Pros:

free certificate that can be downloaded in pdf;
checks the conversational level (not grammar).

Cons:

may slightly overestimate the real result;
You can only take the test for free once.

4. Cambridge English Test — Placement Test

Pros:

one of the most authoritative resources;
results in the form of CEFR level.

Cons:

there is no certificate, but you can take a screenshot as confirmation of the result (informally);
can demotivate you a bit because it sometimes lowers the level.

5. Oxford House English Test

Pros:

quick test, with CEFR score;
is a confirmation of the result that can be used as unofficial testimony.

Minus one is the lack of a certificate. You can take a screenshot as informal confirmation.

6. TrackTest English Assessment

Pros:

there is a trial version with a free certificate (Basic Certificate);
CEFR results.

Minus:

Full certificates are available for a fee, but the basic version is free.

7. EnglishTestsOnline

Plus, the result is immediate.

Minus — there is no certificate, you need to take a screenshot.

«But, of course, we all understand that if you need English for work, then the level indicated in your resume is important, but even more important is whether you can pass an interview with this level,» Yuliia Kolos emphasized in her post.
