Game developer Bogdan Bortakov talked about the Drones Drop Bombs project, which he has been working on for the past few months. In it, you have to defeat a robot uprising with the help of a single small copter.
Drones Drop Bombs is a retro arcade game where you have to defend your base and destroy waves of enemies with a single combat drone.
«Your arsenal includes bombs, lasers, and direct drone strikes, but you should avoid destroying the drone or base, as the game does not contain saves: if you lose, you will have to start over», the developer describes the game.
Players will have to adapt to different enemies and their attack tactics without the ability to upgrade their drone or weapons. The copter can currently carry no more than three bombs, and all 50 levels must be completed in one life.
«The first ideas appeared back in June, when international news reported on the „innovative“ training of foreign armies in the use of drones in modern warfare. Actually, that’s where the ironic name of the project came from, stating the obvious: drones drop bombs», said Bohdan about the beginning of the development of Drones Drop Bombs.
In the summer of 2025, the attention of Ukrainian social media users was attracted by the news that the US Army had dropped a combat grenade from a drone for the first time. Ukrainians were ironic about how the world’s leading army proudly announced this achievement, while the Ukrainian military has been using drone drops for years.
«This is revolutionary, soldiers will be able to use this capability in combat,» said David Ashger, deputy chief of operations for the 7th Army Combat Command.
According to Bohdan Bortakov, in the end his game moved away from the original idea of a 2D simulator and became a full-fledged arcade in the style of old slot machines.
«I can confidently say that this project, even before its release, gave me more new experience than I initially expected. Interaction with the Steam platform and its tools, iterations with the search for a visual style, ordering and integrating Japanese localization, level designer and implementation of custom interface elements, recording and processing sounds — all this will be useful in future projects», the developer said.
Drones Drop Bombs is scheduled for release on January 22, 2026. The game already has a page on Steam.
