«Juniors and mid-levels have lost to artificial intelligence. I can ask ChatGPT to write me any template component or deal with any library in a few minutes. I can ask to add tests. I can say: „refactor this code“ or „find a bug“ and get the result in eight and a half seconds. ChatGPT is really capable of taking on a very large share of routine tasks that juniors and mid-levels were previously hired to perform. But the subscription cost is $20 per month, and the task execution time is a few minutes,» notes Dmytro.
The developer says he would like to be wrong, but he really no longer sees any business case for hiring novice specialists.
His prediction: in the near future, the entry level in IT will rise to the current level of Senior Developer. «And all the efforts to reach this level simply won’t pay off,» the IT expert believes.
Under his post, there are over 80 comments in which experts discuss the hypothesis presented by Dmytro. Here are the most interesting arguments.
Oleksiy Zelenyuk, Software Solutions Architect, wrote: «I heard this saying somewhere — doing something relying on AI is like cutting butter with a chainsaw — you get it done, but then someone has to clean up the mess that remains.»
«I disagree, not a single neuron is still able to store in its memory the entire project they are working on. You still need to understand the project yourself and poke your nose into what is there,» admits Vitaliy S., Android & Flutter developer.
Nadiya Tykholiz, QA Test Analyst, also disagrees with Dmytro. «As a user of the gpt chat, I disagree. You probably haven’t used it, because even with the most successful prompts it makes mistakes. And, I also really like it when it hangs and goes in circles during a light search. So far, it’s just a tool that will do some routine work, but I personally need to put in the bulk of the effort and double-check everything,» she noted.
«If businesses stop hiring juniors and midgets, then the seniors will have nowhere to go. The current ones will die or leave this field, and what will business do then?» asks Vitaliy Uvarov, Cloud Architect.
«Thoughts about the „omnipotence“ of chat are just smoke for me…», says Senior NodeJS Software Engineer Andriy Zilnyk. He gives an example from his own practice: «My last case is related to the AWS infrastructure. I noticed that the chat generates terraform scripts quite well. However, with the task of packaging lambda in an S3 bucket, I started to get really stupid and pushy. The result was not at all satisfactory, the chat created problems and each time I had to solve something that took me away from the main goal in general) After about 1.5 hours of various experiments and fixes, I went to the off-dock and solved the issue in 15 minutes. After that, my trust in this „miracle“ dropped significantly. I don’t dispute that it learns and improves quickly, but having fooled me once, you can’t get my trust back. Also, it couldn’t set up CORS for API Gateway either.» He notes that not all the code generated by this «robot» is working at all. «In order to get an adequate result, you need to make the right queries, or even several. To analyze the output and separate the „slag“, you need quite a good expertise. Therefore, even if a jun or some kind of middleman makes these same queries, it is not a fact that he will feel at a higher level. But the tool is really very good. It saves time and simplifies the development approach through „googling“. Personally, I like it, but first I always go to the official documentation.»
Front-end Developer Anastasia Ostrovska believes that the entry level has, of course, grown (it is still growing), but in order for new seniors to continue to appear, juniors are needed, who will eventually become middlemen, and eventually seniors. «Because seniority is not just about 'writing working code quickly,' it’s about big-picture thinking and experience, which you won’t get until you work on many projects, with different teams, and encounter a bunch of problems that you can solve,» the specialist argues.
