In a comment to the DOU publication, a representative of the NBU reported that the e-hryvnia project is at the stage of research and analysis of usage scenarios and the experience of other countries.
In 2024, the NBU planned to conduct tests of electronic funds. In 2025, Deputy Chairman of the National Bank Oleksiy Shaban said that DLT is being considered for the implementation of the e-hryvnia. This is a distributed ledger technology, where data is not stored in one place, but is distributed across the network.
During the pilot, they were supposed to test how the e-hryvnia could work as a means of payment, in particular on DLT technology, and whether it would be convenient for users to pay with it.
«However, for Ukraine at the moment, in the conditions of a full-scale war, significant investments in technological pilot projects of CBDC are not a priority. In this regard, the NBU is focusing on finding a technological solution for the e-hryvnia in the long term,» the NBU said.
The electronic form of the monetary unit of Ukraine — the e-hryvnia — will be a direct obligation of the central bank. According to the regulator, the digital Ukrainian currency will complement cash and non-cash forms of money and perform all their functions.
