Meta is testing out an old idea again — posting jobs on Facebook. The feature, which the social network first launched in 2017 but shut down less than five years later, is returning in a new format.
Until now, businesses could only post jobs through advertisements, which drew criticism for discriminatory targeting (for example, hiding jobs from certain groups based on gender or religion). This is now prohibited under the new system, The Verge reports .
2017: Facebook launched the Jobs feature in the US and Canada.
2018: Expansion to over 40 countries.
2022: Return to support only the US and Canada.
2023: Complete closure of the program.
Jobs will now appear in the Marketplace tab and may also be shown in relevant groups.
Business pages will be able to publish their own ads.
Only users over 18 years of age can search for a job.
Meta emphasizes that all posts must comply with community policy — no ads for drugs, escorts, or even babysitters (the latter caused surprise among users, as such groups are quite popular on the platform).
Meta positions the update as a tool for the local labor market — that is, vacancies in the service sector, trade, repair, delivery, etc. In fact, it is a digital analogue of the «Employee Wanted» ad on the door of a cafe or store.
For local communities, Facebook remains the primary platform for communication — especially in the US, where it competes with Nextdoor. Now you can not only find out why a police helicopter is flying over your neighborhood, but also find a part-time job nearby.
The feature is currently only available in the US, but Meta plans to gradually expand. Posting jobs is free, at least initially.
