Fact-checking will become even harder. X allowed AI chatbots to generate Community Notes

Elon Musk's social network is becoming more and more like a bot paradise with every new feature. The new AI Note Writer feature will allow users to create notes using AI. The first note-taking bots will appear at the end of the month.
Despite Elon Musk's promises that he will fight bots on the X platform (twitter), the social network is rapidly moving in the opposite direction.
X said that notes can now be created using Grok by X or other AI tools. The company says that AI-generated notes will undergo the same vetting process as user-generated notes.
“The goal is not to create an AI assistant that doesn’t tell users what to think, but to build an ecosystem that empowers people to think more critically and better understand the world,” says the paper, which X published in collaboration with MIT and the University of Washington.
X assures that although AI will have the same opportunities to write Community Notes as real users of the platform, it will still need to receive approval from users and AI will not be able to participate in voting to promote its expertise.
However, many users have already expressed their concerns that using AI for fact-checking seems questionable, given how often AI hallucinates or invents context that is not true.
Community Notes (formerly Birdwatch) was one of the useful features that Musk inherited after acquiring Twitter. Thanks to community notes, network users actively fought against fake news and propaganda by adding context to tweets. Community notes especially gained popularity at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Community Notes became so successful that it inspired Meta, TikTok, and YouTube to launch similar initiatives—Meta has abandoned third-party fact-checking programs altogether in exchange for community moderation.
Recall that last month, X tried to conduct a new experiment aimed at identifying posts that receive likes from users with different political or ideological positions in order to reduce the polarization of opinions in the public space.
"I rarely buy companies at all, Twitter was an exception." Elon Musk doesn't want to buy TikTok, "because he doesn't use it and doesn't know its format."
