Nvidia has released Project G-Assist, a local AI assistant for gamers. What are its capabilities and who can access it?

Nvidia has released an experimental version of Project G-Assist for desktop PCs with GeForce RTX graphics cards. It is available through the Nvidia app and runs locally on the user’s computer. What this free AI assistant can help with.

«As modern PCs become more powerful, they also become more complex to manage. Today, users face more than a trillion possible combinations of hardware and software settings when configuring a PC for maximum performance — spanning the GPU, CPU, motherboard, monitors, peripherals, and more», — Nvidia said in a press release.

The company says it created Project G-Assist, an AI assistant, to simplify this process. It helps users manage PC settings, from optimizing game and system settings, to graphing frame rates and other performance statistics, to controlling individual peripherals like lighting. The user controls the assistant using simple voice or text commands.

Project G-Assist uses a custom-tuned Small Language Model (SLM) to efficiently interpret natural language instructions and call various Nvidia and third-party APIs to perform actions on the PC.

AI can provide real-time diagnostics and recommendations for eliminating system bottlenecks, improving energy efficiency, optimizing game settings, overclocking the GPU, and other similar functions.

Project G-Assist can even control some peripherals and software applications with simple commands, allowing users to compare or adjust fan speeds or change lighting on supported Logitech G, Corsair, MSI, and Nanoleaf devices.

Unlike massive cloud-based AI models that require internet access and a paid subscription, G-Assist is powered by GeForce RTX GPUs. This means it’s responsive, free to use, and can run offline.

G-Assist is now powered by the 8 billion-parameter Llama-based Instruct model, which packs language understanding into a fraction of the size of today’s large-scale AI models. This allows G-Assist to run locally on GeForce RTX hardware.

To run Project G-Assist on your PC, you must have Windows 10 or 11 installed. The AI assistant only works on GeForce RTX 30, 40, and 50 series desktop graphics cards with 12GB VRAM or more. Support for GeForce RTX laptops will be available in a future update.

You can download Project G-Assist from the Home tab of the Nvidia app under the Discover section. G-Assist currently supports GeForce RTX desktop GPUs, English, and voice and text commands. Once installed, press Alt+G to activate the assistant.

Recall that earlier, Xbox Vice President of Artificial Intelligence Fatima Kardar introduced Copilot for Gaming, an AI-based gaming assistant that will help players with tips and useful features.

Gaming gadget maker Razer also unveiled Project Ava, an AI assistant that aims to help gamers become better at games. It takes and analyzes (with permission) thousands of screenshots of gameplay and settings, and generates real-time tips.
