If this feature is enabled, Gemini will automatically remember «key details and preferences» and use them to personalize its responses, Google notes.
«Now the Gemini app can access your past chats to learn about your preferences, and the more you use it, the more personalized responses it provides,» the company explains.
Now, if a user has used Gemini to find ideas for a YouTube channel about Japanese culture in the past, the AI can suggest creating content about how the user tasted Japanese food when the chatbot is asked to provide new video ideas in the future.
«We are rolling out this feature over the coming weeks, starting today. Initially, personalized conversations will be available when using our 2.5 Pro 1 model in select countries, and in the coming weeks we plan to expand this feature to the 2.5 Flash model and other countries,» Gemini developers noted.
The memory feature is enabled by default to help Gemini provide more relevant responses, but you can turn it off at any time by going to Settings in the Gemini app, selecting «Personal Context,» then «Your past chats with Gemini.»
Gemini also received a «Temporary Chats» feature and new settings that give more control over personal data.
«Sometimes you may need to have a quick chat in the Gemini app without affecting future chats. For example, you may want to discuss private matters or simply generate ideas that don’t fit your usual style,» Google explains the purpose of temporary chats.
The feature is already rolling out and will be available to all users in the coming weeks.
Temporary chats will not appear in recent chats or Gemini app activity, and they will not be used to personalize Gemini or train Google’s AI models. They are retained for 72 hours.
