GitHub wants to increase its capacity 30 times due to the boom in AI agents. AWS will help the company with this

While GitHub continues to plan to fully migrate its platform to Microsoft Azure by 2027, current critical workloads have forced the company to make unexpected architectural changes.
Thanks to the rapid spread of artificial intelligence for coding (AI agents), GitHub’s popularity has skyrocketed in the past 12 months. To meet this demand, GitHub developed a plan to increase its capacity tenfold in October 2025. However, earlier this year, the company realized that it needed to scale 30 times. Such explosive growth has hit the stability of the platform hard, leading to several minor outages in the past few months, Neowin reports .
In April, GitHub published a lengthy blog post detailing the steps it was taking to address these stability issues. In the same post, the company confirmed that it was working on a multi-cloud architecture to increase system resiliency. And today, it was reported that GitHub is reaching out to Amazon Web Services to help it cope with the surge in AI-driven code activity.
It’s important to note that GitHub is still in the process of fully migrating to the Azure cloud. The current plan is to finally move the platform to Azure by 2027, allowing it to better scale with developer needs. So the current decision to bring in AWS could be part of a short-term strategy to meet immediate demand.
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that GitHub is leveraging the power of multiple cloud providers, saying: “The incredible surge in AI agent development that began late last year has tested our infrastructure for strength. Microsoft is simultaneously accelerating our transition to Azure and continuing to explore a multi-cloud strategy. This is necessary to ensure the future-proofing, elasticity of compute resources, and horizontal scaling needed to support continued growth.”
For Microsoft, the decision underscores the operational pressures that come with the AI boom. GitHub needs to remain a reliable source of support for developers at a time when competitors like Codex, Cursor, Claude Code, and other AI-powered coding tools are gaining traction. And in such circumstances, the decision to leverage AWS’s computing power seems entirely practical.
