Glovo is experimenting with robot and drone delivery. The company's co-founder said whether it will become mainstream
Glovo co-founder Sascha Michaud believes that at this stage, delivery by robots and drones can complement human labor, especially in certain locations. According to him, technological developments allow this to be done at least now, but the user experience and economic feasibility are still questionable.
Glovo co-founder Sascha Michaud believes that at this stage, delivery by robots and drones can complement human labor, especially in certain locations. According to him, technological developments allow this to be done at least now, but the user experience and economic feasibility are still questionable.
"We have conducted many tests of delivery by robots and drones. But these are only tests, pilot projects. I don’t think that robots will replace people in the short term. But I believe that somewhere they can be a complement to human labor," Michaud noted in an interview with dev.ua.
Robot delivery, in his opinion, can be carried out in cities where distances are short and sidewalks are suitable for their use.
“Because not everywhere there are these sidewalks, and not everywhere they are suitable. I think that scenarios will really be realized when robots can be useful. But today people cope with delivery better and cheaper,” stated the co-founder of Glovo.
As for drones, Michaud says they will be very useful in sparsely populated areas or suburban areas — where the distance is quite large but where there is not much population.
"In such areas, it is difficult to attract couriers and generally set up work there. So, I think, in the near future, drones will be very useful in such sparsely populated areas," he expressed his opinion.
Sasha Michaud believes that there is nothing stopping us from using such technologies today, but the user experience in such scenarios will not be impressive yet, rather the opposite.
“Robots will have problems delivering food directly to your apartment. They don’t work as fast as people yet. For restaurants or stores, this will also have its difficulties — they don’t yet know what to do with it and how to get along with robots. I think there are still a lot of things that need to be improved to make these technologies competitive,” the businessman noted.
Drone delivery, he claims, is relevant in areas with private development, because the drone needs a place where it can drop off cargo or land.
“We work, one way or another, mainly in densely populated cities. So for my apartment in Barcelona, drone delivery is not very relevant,” Michaud stated.
However, he is convinced that these technologies will develop and become more widespread, and the cost of their use will decrease significantly over time.
