Google launches new unified security platform GUS to compete with Microsoft
Google is launching a new unified security platform, Google Unified Security (GUS), that will combine the search giant's existing threat analytics, security operations, and cloud security services, as well as Chrome Enterprise, as it looks to compete with Microsoft, which generates more than $20 billion in annual revenue from the business.
Google's approach is similar to one Microsoft unveiled last month, using AI agents that are task-oriented and interact with various security products, such as providing reports that help security analysts understand which alerts deserve urgent attention.
Google has several such AI agents. One, called Google Security Operations, sorts through security threat alerts, analyzing the context of each incident, and then gives decision-makers advice on which ones deserve action. Another agent uses artificial intelligence to analyze malware and determine the level of threat it poses, The Register reported .
Select customers will be able to use agents during Q2. The launch of the platform coincides with today’s Google Cloud Next event.
Recall that Google acquired cloud security system Wiz for $32 billion in March , which was the largest purchase in the history of the search giant. In addition, in 2022, the company acquired Mandiant for $5.4 billion. These two purchases make Google a player in the information security field, but the company is still inferior to competitors.
The company gave several examples of the new platform's capabilities:
Browser telemetry and asset context from Chrome Enterprise are integrated into Google Security Operations to enhance threat detection and remediation;
Google Threat Intelligence is integrated with Security Check to proactively understand vulnerabilities and validate defenses against the latest observed threat actor activity;
Cloud risks and vulnerabilities from Security Command Center, including those affecting AI workloads, enriched with integrated Google Threat Intelligence analytics for more efficient threat discovery and incident triage.
This shows that Google is moving towards creating a security platform that encompasses many features and controls.
