What is PON and why is this technology changing the Internet in Ukraine?
Communication problems are no longer perceived as a minor inconvenience, as they affect work, study, and even safety. That is why more and more Ukrainians are interested in what PON is and why optics in the apartment is rapidly gaining popularity.
Communication problems are no longer perceived as a minor inconvenience, as they affect work, study, and even safety. That is why more and more Ukrainians are interested in what PON is and why optics in the apartment is rapidly gaining popularity.
To put it simply, PON (passive optical network) technology is the transmission of data over an optical cable using light. The core of an optical cable is thin glass. That is, instead of a copper cable through which electrical signals are transmitted, a transparent conductor is used for PON Internet, through which light pulses pass.
To better understand how PON works and why the technology is considered more energy-efficient, imagine a single trunk line that branches between users, with no active equipment that requires power on the way from the provider to the user’s apartment.
Main advantages of PON technology
PON is a relevant solution that is already being actively implemented by Ukrainian Internet providers, and recently mobile operators have also shown interest in the technology. Among the key reasons for switching to fiber-optic Internet, it is worth noting the following advantages in everyday use:
high speed without sagging;
stable work;
the ability to use the Internet during a power outage if the subscriber has backup power;
infrastructure durability.
Why PON has become particularly relevant in Ukraine
Recent years have shown how important it is to have access to stable internet regardless of the circumstances. Blackouts, the growing demand for remote work and learning, the increase in the number of connected devices — all this creates additional load on the network. In such conditions, the question of what is better — PON or regular internet — is no longer rhetorical.
It is modern Internet technologies, in particular PON, that allow for uninterrupted communication even in difficult conditions. Optical networks do not require a large amount of active equipment, so they operate more stably during power outages.
From the operator’s point of view, PON makes it possible to improve services and make it easier to switch to the next progressive technologies. Thus, in recent years, Internet providers have begun to offer gigabit on a massive scale, that is, switching to PON is not only a change in technology, but also a final transition to gigabit speed. And from this point on, it is easier to develop the infrastructure and move to the next generations of the Internet: from GEPON to GPON and XGPON, which allows you to use the network at a speed of 10 Gbps. Further levels of technology (50 Gbps) have already been standardized in the world and continue to develop, opening up prospects for Internet speeds of up to 100 Gbps in the future.
Who is a PON connection suitable for?
PON technology will be useful for various categories of users. In particular, this type of connection is suitable for:
remote workers for whom a stable connection is critically important;
families with multiple gadgets;
gamers who value speed and minimal latency;
business where the Internet is the basis of work.
Everyone pays attention to the advantages of PON Internet that are most important to them, from fast downloads to uninterrupted communication.
How Lanet Network implements PON technology
The Lanet network systematically invests in infrastructure development and implements solutions that meet the real needs of users. In particular, special attention is paid to the speed, stability and independence of the Internet from external factors. Thus, it was the Lanet network that was the first in the Kyiv market to massively introduce gigabit channels more than 15 years ago and as a result regularly confirms its status as a leader in the ratings of international Internet speed measurement services. Since 2022, the company has been paying special attention to the issue of backup power to ensure uninterrupted services.
The provider began connecting subscribers in Kyiv using PON (fiber-to-the-premises) technology in December 2021 and has been consistently expanding PON coverage in the capital since then. Optical Internet is also being introduced in other cities of coverage, for example, in Ivano-Frankivsk and Kalush, where Ethernet was previously the priority. It is worth noting that in small settlements and the private sector, PON was and remains the only Internet connection technology.
In addition, the Lanet Network is actively developing the multigigabit segment. Thus, in 2025, XGPON tariffs with a speed of 5 Gbps appeared for Kyiv and its suburbs, this year this speed became available to the provider’s subscribers in Rivne. And for Fastiv and Kalush, Lanet already offers 2 Gbps.
As a modern PON provider, the Lanet Network is modernizing its optical infrastructure and updating its equipment, which in the next 5-10 years will allow it to switch to even higher speeds, for example, to XGS-PON.
What benefits do Lanet subscribers receive?
Users receive not only modern fiber-optic Internet with gigabit or multi-gigabit speed, but also confidence in the stability of the connection every day. More speed, energy independence and maximum comfort in using all online services.
