Grammarly is currently undergoing a transformation from a single-product company to a multi-product company under the leadership of new CEO Shishir Merotra, who founded the startup Coda. As part of these large-scale changes, the most expensive Ukrainian unicorn will receive a new name by the end of this year.

Grammarly, known to millions of users for the past 16 years as a grammar checker, is being transformed into an ecosystem of AI tools — artificial intelligence agents that will be “delivered” directly to where users work: in Google Docs, Gmail, Slack, or mobile apps. To cement this transformation, Grammarly will also change its name.

This was stated by the new CEO Shishir Merotra in an interview with Forbes Ukraine.

Grammarly is currently in the midst of a relaunch, says Merotra. The company will soon roll out changes to the core Grammarly user experience. Later this year, it will introduce larger updates that will expand functionality beyond just spell checking. It is also opening up the platform for others to join and interact with their end users through it.

"The way we scale product development is changing for the company. To change the external perception, we will have to change our positioning so that people expect that we will have many products and perceive Grammarly as just one agent on a larger platform that will unite many, many other agents. We are currently working on a new name for the company. We have already decided on an option, but we are not ready to announce it yet. These changes will happen by the end of the year," the company's CEO noted.

Recall that in December 2024, Grammarly acquired Coda , the main product of which is the cloud-based multi-user document editor of the same name. Its founder, Shishir Merotra, headed Grammarly.

This isn't Grammarly's only acquisition. In July of this year, the company bought startup Superhuman , which is developing an AI tool for email.

But at the moment, Grammarly has no plans for an acquisition anytime soon, although if the right opportunity arises, the company may change its mind.

“We had two big acquisitions this year. We acquired my previous company, Coda, a developer of an advanced and modern document environment. And about a month ago, we acquired the email application Superhuman. And we build a lot of things internally. For example, most of the work on our AI agents is done in Ukraine, in Kyiv. So, I don’t think we need to buy any company. But if we see a good opportunity, we will,” explained Shishir Merotra.

Grammarly

Grammarly, founded by Ukrainians Max Lytvyn and Alex Shevchenko, has crossed the $700 million mark in annual revenue. It has about 40 million daily active users, over 50,000 organizations, and 3,000 educational institutions.

In 2021, the company became the most expensive startup with Ukrainian roots, receiving a valuation of $13 billion.
