Sony says it’s a concept for future immersive entertainment. The device is a giant cube that players enter, similar to a VR booth. However, it’s not virtual reality, as the cube consists of incredibly high-resolution screens that represent the game world around the player, IGN notes.
To further enhance the immersion, the cube produces «immersive sound» and even «the smell and atmosphere of interactive PlayStation gaming content.» In the demo shown, players had simulated weapons and fired at screens as clickers from The Last of Us appeared on them, presumably smelling something like rotting fungus or something.
The demo was done using gameplay taken from The Last of Us, but apparently adapted to work within the Future Immersive Entertainment Concept. Even if that were the case, of course, this technology is still many years away and is likely incredibly expensive, so there are a lot of limitations to getting it into the hands of casual gamers. In the future, Sony may show it off in other franchises like God of War, Horizon, etc.
The last part of The Last of Us was released in 2020. After the cancellation of the multiplayer expansion The Last of Us 2, new game projects in the franchise will apparently not appear soon, as the Naughty Dog studio is currently focused on a new science fiction franchise called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Although previously, The Last of Us series co-creator Neil Druckmann said that although he doesn’t have a story for the sequel yet, he already has a concept that he likes no less than the concepts of the first two parts.
