A military expert explained how Shahed kamikaze drones counteract Ukrainian electronic warfare systems, and what can be done about it

Military analyst, engineer, and communications and drone expert Sergey «Flash» Bezkrestnov said that the Russians use «CRPA antennas» in «shaheeds,» which allow them to distinguish electronic warfare interference from real signals from a satellite.

The specialist reported that long-range Ukrainian and Russian drones use satellite navigation to reach their targets, so electronic warfare specialists suppress these signals to knock the drones off course.

«To combat suppression, special „CRPA antennas“ are installed on strike UAVs. Such antennas are able to distinguish a satellite signal from an electronic warfare signal and cut out interference from electronic warfare. Conventionally, the more elements in an antenna, the more electronic warfare sources it can overcome. At the beginning of the war, there were 4 of them on Shahedy, then there were 8, then 12, and now 16,» noted «Flash.»

According to him, this allows Russian drones to continue moving towards the target and wait for the moment when full communication is restored. According to Sergey Bezkrestnov, there are two options to counteract this method:

  1. Creating a large network of electronic warfare points throughout the country. Thanks to this, drones will be constantly under its influence and will not be able to find a signal from the satellite. But the Russians can increase the number of CRPA, and building such a network is difficult.
  2. Powerful EW. The CRPA can be suppressed with a strong EW signal of 100 watts and an antenna aimed at the drone. However, this method is not very suitable for a massive attack by UAVs flying from all directions.

«The first method is more strategic and long-term. It is suitable for protecting large areas of the country. The second method is faster and suitable for protecting critical infrastructure,» the expert explained.

Last year, it was reported that the Russian army began using reconnaissance drones with navigation disabled. «The enemy is using new tactical techniques: it launches a UAV without navigation, without a GPS signal. And this signal is turned on directly above the object that the enemy plans to scout and strike there with an Iskander,» said Yuriy Ignat, a representative of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

«Flash» added that the Russians would thus seek to «cover» their entire territory with electronic warfare, which would make it impossible for Ukrainian long-range drones, which would rely on satellite navigation, to fly. He called for the development and implementation of navigation based on other principles «right now.»

Earlier, Australian company Q-CTRL announced the first real-world demonstration of its commercial quantum navigation system, Ironstone Opal, which it claims is 50 times more accurate than traditional global positioning systems (GPS).
