Elon Musk and SpaceX have come under federal scrutiny from US military agencies over undisclosed meetings with foreign leaders, including Putin.
Elon Musk and SpaceX are under three federal investigations by three different U.S. military agencies for alleged failure to comply with reporting protocols. The New York Times reported that Musk and his private aerospace company repeatedly ignored disclosure requirements for travel and meetings with foreign leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. At the same time, SpaceX lawyers advised Musk not to seek the highest level of clearance for U.S. government information.
Three investigations into Musk and SpaceX have been launched by the Department of Defense's Office of Inspector General, the Air Force, and the Pentagon's Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security. The Air Force also reportedly denied Musk a high-level security clearance over concerns about potential security risks if he were allowed to work with certain classified information, Engadget reports .
Some SpaceX employees, aware of the feedback, told the Times their concerns about Musk’s ability to handle sensitive data when he openly posts meeting notes on his X account. He already has the highest security clearance at SpaceX, which allows him to view certain pieces of classified material, such as information about advanced U.S. military technology. Musk is required to disclose certain details about his personal life and travel habits to the Department of Defense, but some employees say he and his company failed to meet those requirements as recently as 2021.
Sources also told the newspaper that Musk allegedly failed to provide department officials with his full itinerary, including meetings with foreign leaders. He also may not have provided reports of his personal use of prescription drugs as part of the vetting process, even though he has smoked marijuana with Joe Rogan on his podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience” and talked about microdosing ketamine on his X-Page, as well as with former CNN host Don Lemon .
America is not the only country concerned about Musk’s ability to keep classified information. According to The New York Times, nine other countries, “including Europe and the Middle East,” have expressed concerns about Musk’s meetings with U.S. defense officials over the past three years. Employees, concerned about the lack of response to these vetting requirements, have not reported the behavior for fear of losing their jobs.
The Wall Street Journal writes that SpaceX lawyers advised senior management not to seek the highest level of clearance for Musk, which would give him access to details about secret programs in which the company, which has deepened its ties with national security agencies in recent years, is involved.
The reason, according to WSJ sources, was that Musk would have to answer government questions about his contacts with foreign nationals and drug use. In internal discussions, lawyers and executives have floated scenarios in which Musk could inadvertently reveal secrets to foreign officials with whom he regularly communicates.
Lawyers and executives concluded that if SpaceX applied for the highest level of clearance, it risked being denied or, worse, losing its existing state secrets clearance.
Those concerns may soon be over. President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Musk, who spent about $200 million to support his presidential campaign, to head a new Department of Government Efficiency that will advise the new administration on cost cutting and regulation. As president, Trump will have the authority to give Musk and other DOGE employees wide access to classified information as they seek ways to cut costs.
What will Musk do in the new US government efficiency department and what functions will the institution have, designed to cut government spending by $2 trillion: Bloomberg analysis
Although Trump has not publicly stated whether he intends to do so, SpaceX is already scouting a location for a secure facility where Musk and other DOGE employees could review top-secret information.
