Andrey Karpaty admitted that 80% of his code is written by AI and predicted a "slopocalypse" that will occur in 2026
One of the most famous researchers in the field of machine learning, Director of Artificial Intelligence at Tesla, and the author of the term «vibecoding» Andrey Karpaty shared his observations about AI in programming.
One of the most famous researchers in the field of machine learning, Director of Artificial Intelligence at Tesla, and the author of the term «vibecoding» Andrey Karpaty shared his observations about AI in programming.
«Given the recent increase in LLM programming capabilities, like many others, I quickly went from about 80% manual programming + autocomplete and 20% AI agents in November to 80% AI agent programming and 20% editing + autocomplete in December,» Karpaty said .
According to him, he now programs mostly in natural English and «shyly tells LLM what code to write.»
«It’s a bit ego-inducing, but the ability to control software with large ‘code actions’ is incredibly useful, especially once you get used to it, configure it, learn to use it, and understand what it can and can’t do,» says Andrey Karpaty.
He called AI programming the biggest change in his programming workflow in the last two decades. Karpaty believes something similar will happen to a significant percentage of programmers.
«It’s so interesting to watch an agent work tirelessly on something. They never get tired, they never get demoralized, they just keep going and trying things that a human would have long ago given up to fight another day. This is the moment when you can ‘feel the AGI’ by watching it struggle with something for a long time, only to emerge victorious 30 minutes later,» Karpaty shared his thoughts.
He says programming with AI agents is fun because it takes away a lot of the boring fill-in-the-blank work and leaves the creative part. However, he notes that he is gradually losing the ability to write code on his own.
«I’m preparing for 2026 as the year of the slopacolypse on all of github, substack, arxiv, X/instagram, and, in general, all of digital media. We’ll also see a lot more hype around AI performance (is it even possible?) against the backdrop of real, genuine improvements,» predicts Karpaty.
Slop (or «AI junk») has been chosen as the word of the year for 2025 by the American dictionary Merriam-Webster. It refers to «low-quality digital content, usually produced in large quantities using artificial intelligence.»
OpenAI co-founder Andrey Karpaty: «The industry lives in a future where fully autonomous systems write all the code, and humans become unnecessary. I don’t want to live in such a world»
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
