KAI and MIT, with the support of Skyfall, Warbirds, Frontline Robotics, launched a joint engineering program. What is the Ukraine Innovation and Engineering Lab?
On October 9, the Ukraine Innovation and Engineering Lab, a joint engineering program of the Kyiv Aviation Institute (KAI) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), opened in Kyiv's UNIT.City park. For 10 weeks, young engineers will look for solutions to problems that Ukrainian miltech companies have not yet managed to solve, and will create their own prototypes of solutions.

80 participants have already been selected for the program out of over a hundred applicants.
Inspiration from MIT
The idea to bring such a program to Ukraine came after Radmila Segol, the program's organizer, went to MIT. There, she established a collaboration with professor Gene Kesselman, whom she calls one of the biggest supporters of Ukraine at MIT, and perhaps in the United States as a whole. She was particularly interested in the fact that MIT students were working on real-world tasks, including for the US Special Operations Forces, so their developments could be applied in practice.
“I listened and understood that these people are really creating something that can be used in the field. And my first thought was: we need to do the same. After all, we have a real war going on, there are a lot of engineering problems and a lot of work,” Segol said at the presentation. So she discussed with Kesselman how the MIT methodology could be used in Ukraine so that students work on real tasks from miltech companies and they take on this task together.
She also mentioned that her most memorable experience at MIT was the Banana Room. This is a room where any student can grab a banana at any time. The program organizer believes that KAI should also create such a room.
KAI partners and sponsors of this program include Skyfall, Sine, NDA Recruitment, Warbirds, Frontline Robotics, as well as Brave1 and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Registration for the program was open to senior undergraduate and graduate students and professionals with experience in engineering, AI, robotics, electronics, or development.
To give students a chance to work on real-world problems, the program organizers asked partner companies to share problems they haven't yet been able to solve. Participants will be able to choose which tasks they are interested in working on, but there's a caveat: they won't know which company proposed a particular problem. The organizers will intentionally hide the names of the companies so that students can focus on the technical challenges, rather than the well-known "names."
“Companies imagine one solution, and you are people from the outside, so you can come up with something that no one inside the company has even thought of,” Segol explained to the students.
Classes in shelters
The biggest difficulty during the preparation, according to the organizer, was the security situation. Due to the threat of Russian shelling, classes will most likely have to be held in shelters.
This program will also be available in Lviv. Lviv teams will work on the same tasks from partner companies. But Kyiv teams should complete their work in December, and Lviv teams in January. A joint Demo Day is planned for February 2027.
KAI and MIT have opened a recruitment for the Ukraine Innovation and Engineering Lab engineering program for over 100 participants. They will create prototypes for real-world problems in 10 weeks
