Tetyana Lukyniuk, head of Google in Ukraine, spoke about the mistakes that novice managers most often make. In her opinion, they should quickly learn to delegate tasks.
Lukyniuk reported this in an interview for the DOU YouTube channel.
«Inability to delegate and a rather long transition from doing everything myself to ‘I do everything with the team’s hands,’ but I am responsible for the result», said the head of Google in Ukraine.
She added that this process happened organically for her, and she changed her job from being a manager «in a smaller company» to being a «manager in a larger company».
«It’s just an understanding that either you die or you delegate. That was the choice. In short, if you can’t delegate to anyone, then just take on more work and you won’t have a choice», Lukyniuk noted.
She advised taking the time to understand the team: who can be trusted, who really gets results — and letting these people go «on their own».
«We need to determine who to pay more attention to, who to motivate, how to move together, etc. Because the next stage is top management. It involves complex dilemmas and situations with more than one solution (and none will be 100% correct)», says Lukyniuk.
According to her, to manage this level of uncertainty, a top manager must fully rely on the team.
Previously, Chase Rigby, a former Google product manager who held the position for six years and now heads Tassel, shared his methods for conducting performance reviews. He said that while working at Google, he learned the importance of transparency.
