Rabbit or chicken? Dry food or wet food? Cheap or expensive? Nearly every pet parent has faced these questions hundreds of times when choosing what to feed their tailed pet. Aitiv residents are no exception. We have already talked a lot about the peculiarities of caring for four-legged friends, as well as shared stories of IT specialists and their pets.

We asked the people of Aitiv what they feed their four-legged friends, and found that everyone has their own approach to choosing food, there is no single recipe.

So dev.ua, within the framework of the PetTech partnership section with the largest Ukrainian cat and dog food manufacturer Kormotech, spoke with Olesya Shmorgun, the head of Kormotech’s breeders and veterinarian service, about the rules and features of choosing food for dogs and cats. We have created a manual that should be followed so that food for pets is not only tasty, but also useful.

How do the people of Haiti choose fodder for their tails?

In order to understand whether there is a systematic approach when choosing food for pet parents employed in IT, we asked five specialists what they are guided by when deciding on the type and brand of food.

From the answers above, it can be seen that there is no single approach to choosing fodder for pets among them. So we asked the specialist, head of Kormotech breeders and veterinarians service, Olesya Shmorgun, what to pay attention to when choosing a particular food for a pet.

We have created 10 simple feeding rules that should be followed in order not to harm the animal.

When choosing feed, you should first of all make sure that it corresponds to the animal’s breed, age, size, and take into account the individual characteristics of the animal, if any. Food for allergy sufferers, castrated/sterilized animals, certain breeds of both dogs and cats differs in composition. It is also worth paying attention to the taste preferences of the animal — which taste you like better. We will stop at what she eats better.
At present, all fodder allowed for sale are balanced, full-rational, despite the fact that they have different composition, which also depends on the cost. Therefore, the choice of more meaty food, for example, is rather the desire of the owner to satisfy the pet as much as possible. However, feed based on vegetable protein is also a complete, high-quality product. There are feeds on the market that do not contain meat at all, but are completely balanced in terms of the content of proteins, fats, some vitamins, micro- and macroelements. However, if possible, you should pay attention to the composition of the product, so that the feed contains ingredients to improve the quality of life of the animal. Such feeds are considered to be of higher quality, since natural ingredients are used for their production.
What feed to choose for an animal — dry, wet or natural — there is no unequivocal answer. For example, feeding a large dog with wet food will be expensive. Therefore, dry feed is a priority here.
For cats and small dogs with health problems, it is worth combining both dry and wet food during the day. A special point for cats: daily consumption of wet food provides cats, who tend to drink little water, the necessary amount of fluid to ensure kidney and urinary tract health
If, for example, a small-breed cat or dog is fed only wet food, such an animal will develop tartar very quickly. Therefore, I advise you to give a bag of wet food in the morning, and dry food in the evening, which significantly slows down the formation of tartar.
The pet should always have access to fresh, clean drinking water. For cats, water should be specially purified and demineralized as much as possible to avoid the risk of developing urolithiasis. The norm of water consumption is 30 ml per kilogram of body weight.
Make sure that the animal does not overeat. Many breeds of dogs are ready to eat as much as is available. And then they get sick. Therefore, it is worth taking into account the characteristics of the breed, the temperament of the animal. With cats, this problem occurs less often. Special patience is required when feeding neutered animals: in the first weeks after the operation, their appetite increases, and it is very difficult to resist and not give more than the norm. However, if you endure it for a few weeks, your appetite and hormones will return to normal, and the amount of food it consumed before the operation will be enough for the animal. Otherwise, we risk obesity and many diseases as a result.
Do not feed dogs with cat food, and vice versa. If it happened once, don’t worry. But if we do it systematically, we will get problems with the animal’s health. The fact is that food for cats and dogs differs in the content of protein and fat. Cat food is more protein. And if you constantly feed a dog with cat food, the animal will have problems with the kidneys and liver.
Regarding feeding with natural food, it is worth understanding that it is extremely difficult to balance such a diet. A pet parent at home actually cannot provide. Because there must be a correct set of products and a detailed calculation to provide the animal with the necessary amount of proteins, fats, vitamins, micro-macro-minerals, fiber, etc.
At most, raw meat carries a number of threats to the animal’s health, such as helminths, the causative agents of many diseases. I also do not advise giving bones to dogs — this is a very traumatic story.
There are many treats for ponytails on the market. Pressed, dried treats, different variations of rodents. However, you should also be careful with them and pay attention to the feeding behavior and temperament of the animal. Because, for example, an animal may swallow a small delicacy. Also on the market there is such a delicacy as horns. However, animals often break their teeth on horns.
Some such products can cause banal allergies. And for small animals, it is worth paying attention to the calorie content of such supplements and tagging them with the main methods of feed, so as not to overfeed.
You cannot feed animals from the table with products and dishes that are not intended for them. This can worsen their health. Moreover, no skins from sausages, sausages, etc., because these are often artificial materials that cannot be digested. It is also not worth feeding sweets to a four-legged friend, because in this way we disturb the balance of nutrition in the direction of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are food for yeast, fungi and some bacteria.
In rural areas, it is extremely important to control the arbitrary feeding of animals. Grass, apples, and corn are often freely available to the animal, and uncontrolled eating of them can harm its health. Animals that eat uncontrollably are often overweight, and later have problems with digestion, joints, etc.
