Such complaints have appeared on Google's support forums, The Register reports . One Gemini Pro user reported that his entire history had disappeared without a trace on both his phone and desktop, even though his auto-delete settings were set to keep chats for up to 18 months. He added that the requests themselves still show up in the activity logs, indicating that the data exists somewhere, just not where it should be.
Another user complained about at least 15 chats disappearing, with “no evidence left in the activity logs that they even existed.” He added that the incident made him seriously consider switching to a competitor after years of tolerating Google’s habit of suddenly breaking or shutting down its services.
Others believe the problem is much more serious than a simple interface glitch. One user reported that recent chats had disappeared not only from Gemini but also from Google My Activity. He warned that if paid users permanently lost their jobs, the consequences could go far beyond angry forum posts.
While some users predictably link the incident to the Gemini 3.1 rollout, there is currently no evidence beyond a simple coincidence, and Google itself has given no reason to think it is anything more sinister than a simple bug.
“We are currently fixing an issue that temporarily prevented chat history from being displayed for a small number of users,” Google said. “The chat history of affected users will be restored in the near future. We understand how frustrating this situation is and are working to resolve it quickly.”
