Kyivstar has signed an agreement with Starlink to implement Direct to Cell satellite communication. Ukraine may become one of the first countries to receive this technology
Kyivstar CEO Oleksandr Komarov said that on December 30, 2024, «it has every chance of getting into the history textbooks of the development of Ukrainian telecom» due to the signing of an agreement with Starlink to implement Direct to Cell in Ukraine. This technology provides mobile communication via satellite to any smartphone that supports 4G.
Kyivstar CEO Oleksandr Komarov said that on December 30, 2024, «it has every chance of getting into the history textbooks of the development of Ukrainian telecom» due to the signing of an agreement with Starlink to implement Direct to Cell in Ukraine. This technology provides mobile communication via satellite to any smartphone that supports 4G.
«The innovative Direct to Cell service is able to provide mobile communication on any 4G smartphone using a satellite signal where there is no traditional coverage from operators, or if the terrestrial network is not working due to military and man-made factors», — Komarov said on his social networks.
According to him, the companies will begin working on implementing the technology immediately after signing the agreement. The Kyivstar President expects that by the end of 2025, Ukraine will become one of the first countries in the world to implement Starlink’s Direct to Cell technology.
«This is a major investment by Kyivstar in developing digital infrastructure, improving coverage, ensuring uninterrupted communication for all Ukrainians, and strengthening national security», — noted Oleksandr Komarov.
It was previously reported that the satellite operator Starlink, owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, plans to launch a Direct to Cell service, which will allow you to transmit text and voice messages, as well as share files from standard 4G LTE smartphones via a satellite connection.
Interestingly, last year, the telecommunications holding company Veon, which owns the largest mobile network in Ukraine, Kyivstar, signed an agreement with the British company OneWeb to integrate the company’s satellite services with its terrestrial network in Ukraine.
Each OneWeb terminal can connect hundreds of people and can run on solar power. OneWeb has about 550 low-orbit satellites and plans to launch dozens more through Musk’s SpaceX.
