Mobile operator Kyivstar announced the start of the first free testing of Starlink Direct to Cell technology, which provides mobile Internet on a smartphone from a satellite, and announced when all users will have access to it. How to participate in the testing?
«We have space news for you. We are launching testing — Starlink Direct to Cell. This is a new technology that acts as a mobile communications tower in space and allows you to stay connected even in hard-to-reach places where there is an open sky», Kyivstar reported.
The company noted that they are first testing sending SMS messages.
Testing Starlink Direct to Cell does not require additional payment — SMS, minutes, and gigabytes will cost as usual in the tariff.
«During the test period, Direct to Cell will be provided at no additional charge. It is important to us that as many Ukrainians as possible stay connected during this difficult time», Kyivstar explained.
However, there are also restrictions — subscribers in Dnipropetrovsk and Chernihiv regions will temporarily not be able to participate in the testing.
The SMS beta test will be held in October and November 2025. To participate in the test, you must register your number on the Kyivstar website. By the end of the year, all Kyivstar subscribers will be able to access sending SMS messages via Direct to Cell.
Later, the company promises to add the ability to use mobile Internet and VoLTE voice communication via Direct to Cell.
