Ukrainian shooter La Quimera has finally been released in Steam Early Access. The game received terrible reviews
La Quimera, from Reburn studio, formed by former developers of 4A Games Ukraine, was supposed to be released on April 25, but the release was postponed due to poor reviews from reviewers. La Quimera, from Reburn studio, formed by former developers of 4A Games Ukraine, was supposed to be released on April 25, but the release was postponed due to poor reviews from reviewers. It was expected that the game would be postponed for further development, but on May 7, the project appeared in early access format.
La Quimera is a story-driven shooter set in a bleak future of Latin America, featuring futuristic weapons, exoskeletons, and combat abilities. The game features single-player or 3-player co-op.
On April 12, Reburn held a short closed beta test of La Quimera and announced that it planned to release the game on April 25. However, the release never took place at that time. The project was reportedly met with negative reviews from game reviewers, who gave La Quimera low marks due to its short duration and numerous bugs.
"As many of you know, we were unable to launch the game last week due to technical difficulties that impacted our ability to launch the game live. While we initially aimed for a quick resolution, the situation required more time and attention than we anticipated," La Quimera developers explained on April 30.
According to them, La Quimera was conceived as a "big, complete journey," but as indie developers (the game doesn't have a publisher), they had to "take certain steps." One of those steps was the decision to release La Quimera in Early Access after resolving technical issues.
La Quimera became available on Steam on May 7. In the Ukrainian region, the project costs 700 UAH; the project has only English localization.
Meanwhile, reviews for Reburn have appeared on review aggregators OpenCritic and Metacritic. The average score on both sites is currently 41 out of 100.
What ratings did La Quimera gaming publications give:
GamingBolt — 6/10.
Game Rant — 5/10.
Wccftech — 4/10.
Xbox Era — 4 / 10
Atarita — 40/100.
But Why Tho? — 3 / 10.
Worth Playing — 2.5 / 10.
"Reburn's La Quimera is a surprisingly short and serviceable shooter that unfortunately fails to live up to the heights of its inspirations," wrote Matt Karoglu of Game Rant.
"La Quimera feels like an ambitious game that was let down by time constraints during development. While it has the makings of a good game, the overall lack of quality in most aspects makes it difficult to recommend," says Joel Daniels of GamingBolt.
"La Quimera is an unfinished game, a patchwork of pieces stitched together that don't add up to a coherent picture. The number of bugs is a clear indication that this game needed more time to develop, as are the unfinished story and gameplay that weren't given enough time to develop. If La Quimera had been announced as an early access release, I would have had more hope for what would come next, but if it's a full game, it's not worth your time," noted Wccftech reviewer David Carcasole.
Although La Quimera was indeed released in early access, this did not save it from negative reviews from players on Steam. The project currently has 41 reviews from gamers, of which only 39% are positive. Because of this, the game has a “mostly negative” rating on Steam from players — they complain about the short duration (about 3 hours), which does not correlate well with the price of about $ 30, poor shooting, sound and optimization.
"We developed the initial part of the game to test our design decisions and get player feedback to adjust our approaches during further development. Given the complexity of combining narrative and cooperative gameplay, some elements may change significantly based on player feedback," Reburn explains of the early access release.
The developers expect that it could take up to 18 months to complete the game to version 1.0. The release of La Quimera should improve the level design, balance between combat and narrative, and increase the number of levels that complete the story arcs.
"Currently, the early access version includes the first four levels of the campaign with fully integrated story and gameplay elements. It offers approximately five hours of story content designed to showcase the core experience we are aiming for," Reburn assures.
At the same time, the developers warn that they plan to increase the cost of the game in accordance with the appearance of new content.
Reburn Studio, formed by Ukrainian developers of the Metro series, has officially announced its debut game La Quimera. Director Nicolas Winding Ref is working on its plot.
