According to a nationwide survey by the Rating Sociological Group, most Ukrainians do not support blocking Telegram, but they approve of increased surveillance by law enforcement officers.
76% of respondents oppose a complete blocking of Telegram in Ukraine, while 16% support the idea, according to Rating Group, one of Ukraine's largest research institutions.
On the other hand, the majority of respondents support increased law enforcement control over the messenger, while 41% are against it.
In total, 67% of Ukrainians are more or less active users of Telegram. It is used more often by younger respondents, residents of Kyiv and regional centers, and citizens with higher incomes.
72% of respondents believe that Telegram has no impact on their personal security. Only 8% believe that using the messenger has a negative impact on personal security, and 15% believe that it has a positive impact.
Regarding the impact on national security, respondents' opinions differ. About a third say there is no impact, and another quarter hesitate to answer.
At the same time, every 4th respondent (28%) believes that Telegram negatively affects national security.
In Ukraine, the topic of Telegram security has begun to be discussed again after the messenger was restricted in Russia .
In February, the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Speech, Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, stated that Ukraine has not only the technical capabilities to restrict Telegram, but also the resources to create its own secure messenger for the state , media, and business based on "Diya".
A similar statement to Yurchyshyn was made by Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Iryna Vereshchuk. According to her, after the terrorist attack in Lviv, Ukraine should return to the issue of the presence of Telegram and other anonymous platforms in the information space during the war.
