A memo from Meta has been published online, outlining an algorithm for laying off specialists based on their productivity. The rules for laying off employees are to be announced next Monday, February 10.

As a reminder, in January, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told employees in an internal memo that he had «decided to raise the bar on performance management» and act quickly to «move out low-performing employees.» At the time, he said that affected U.S. employees would be notified on Monday.

On Friday, February 7, an internal memo from the head of human resources, leaked online, told employees what to expect when the layoffs begin, Business Insider reports .

In an internal memo from the head of human resources at Meta, employees were told what to expect on Monday, when the company would begin cutting jobs based on performance.

Janelle Gale, the company’s vice president of human resources, told employees in a post on Meta’s internal forum about «how the process will work and what to expect by Monday.»

Gale said affected employees will receive an email notification to their work and personal email addresses and will lose access to company systems within an hour of receiving the notification. They will also receive information about severance pay in the same email, she added.

«I understand that for teams taking leave on Monday, it can be a difficult day, and this may cause some disruption and short-term impacts to your daily work,» Gail wrote.

«Managers may not have all the answers to your questions yet, but they will collaborate with their leaders and work on these changes with you to provide additional clarity,» she added.

The statement said that employees in France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands are exempt from the cuts «due to local legislation» and that the company will instead adhere to «local performance management processes.»

Gale also detailed the timing of when affected employees in different countries will be notified. She said some international employees in more than a dozen countries will receive the notification later than their U.S. counterparts, between Tuesday and February 18.

Gale’s memo also states that laid-off employees can apply for a job after leaving Meta after the end of the layoff period and the final date of employment. She added that «prior work will be taken into account» in making the decision.

The announcement said that all affected employees will receive their shares by February 15, as well as bonuses, if they are entitled to them, and any due dividends equivalent to them.

Dismissal based on performance on February 10

As we recently announced, company-wide layoffs will take place on February 10th as part of the Performance@ 2024 cycle. I would like to share more information about how this process will unfold and what to expect by Monday.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10

Work from home. Our offices will be open, but anyone whose work permits can work from home on Monday. This will automatically count as personal time. Employee Notification

Note: Employees in Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands will be exempt from this exercise due to local legislation and will instead follow local performance management processes.

— Time frames for some international messages will vary.

Employees in these countries will receive notifications between February 11-18. Czech Republic, Greece, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Malaysia, New Zealand, Norway, Nigeria, Philippines, Senegal, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand — While notifications will mostly be sent on the designated day and time for each country, some notifications may arrive with a delay due to reasons such as an employee being on protected leave.

Procedures

Impacted NORAM employees and most affected international employees will be notified via email via @meta.com and personal email addresses, and will no longer be employed by Meta from this point forward.

Guidance will be provided where different processes apply in different countries.

Access to the systems will be removed for affected employees within one hour of receiving notification.

Information about the severance package will be sent to affected employees as part of their email notifications. They will also receive a separate email to their personal email address with the severance agreement.

I understand that this can be a difficult day for teams that are furloughed on Monday, and this may cause some disruption and short-term impacts to your daily work. Managers may not have all the answers to your questions yet, but they will work with their leaders and work through these changes with you to provide additional clarity. I appreciate your continued commitment and focus on the work that lies ahead as we navigate these changes together.
